March 27, 2008—Mini-Workshop: Know Which Rules to Break
- Do you know when to use dialect, idioms, slang or other levels of language?
- Can your creative language use confuse your reader?
- Every piece of writing evolves differently for every individual writer. What is acceptable today?
Join Bernice Lever for an interactive workshop on how to use composition rules to polish your manuscript ready for publishers.
Learn how to hone your own style. How each character's dialogue can differ. The evening will include time for Q & A.
Two pages or 500 word max. samples were invited to be sent directly by March 21, 2008 to Bernice Lever for inclusion in discussions. Or just bring your style queries on the evening of March 27th.
Open to All Writers
This event will be open to our members and to the public. Meetings are free to members; a fee is charged for non-members.

Presenter Bio (Updated)
Bernice Lever, now living on Bowen Island, BC, gets high on words. A poet with nine poetry books, she has also written a textbook and other non-fiction works. She still gives creative writing workshops, mainly at festivals and conferences: Surrey International Writers' Conference, Write On Bowen, and others.
She enjoys performing her poems and prose pieces in many settings as she has read and been published on five continents. Best known for her 15 years as editor of Waves, a literary magazine, she has won awards for her poems, and in 2004, CAA's Allan Sangster Award. Supported by the creative energies of many people of today and yesterday, she continues writing poems and much more.
Life member of the Canadian Authors Association and the Canadian Poetry Association, she also belongs to others, including the BC Federation of Writers. Bernice currently serves the CAA as BC Regional V.P. and Grievance Chair for CAA contracts as well as Vancouver Branch's Writer in Residence for manuscript editing and evaluation.

Writing: A Successful Business helped writers with the business aspects of writing. The presenters were Anthony Dalton and Bernice Lever.If you want to have a successful writing business, you need to treat your writing as a business. This workshop teaches you to plan to succeed and to establish the habits that help you to sell your product (writing) to markets that are profitable. As well, you'll learn to avoid the pitfalls that can slow or stop the momentum of your writing career.

You will learn how to assess your writing as a business including how to build a product file, establish a home office and to plan your writing business. We'll discuss what it takes to know your market, sell your writing and how to access grants, prizes and other writing-related income. Learn how to deal with problems and how to set up support for your writing business. Learn about the documentation you'll need at tax time as well as the potential deductions.
Presenter Bio
Anthony Dalton, author of Baychimo: Arctic Ghost Ship, is a British-born Canadian adventurer, writer and photographer. His expeditions have taken him across the Sahara, through the deserts of the Middle East, into the mountains of Afghanistan, down wilderness rivers in northern Canada, into the Australian outback, through the Sundarbans jungle of Bangladesh, and into the Arctic. His previous books are Wayward Sailor: In Search of the Real Tristan Jones and J/Boats: Sailing to Success. He is also co-author of The Best of Nautical Quarterly, Vol 1, The Lure of Sail.

Presenter Bio
Bernice Lever has published and edited in many genres. Her workshops on creativity and marketing have helped many writers get published. She has a BA and MA in English from York University in Toronto, Ontario and taught English for 14 years at Seneca College, Ontario. Her 8th book of poems, Never A Straight Line, Black Moss, 2007 shows her various voices used in her readings and lectures on 5 continents.
