Honouring Long and Meritorious Service

Award History - Entry Information - Winners

History

Annually since 1968 the CAA has honoured one of its members for long and meritorious service.

This award is in memory of Allan S. Sangster, a CBC producer, especially in the realm of classical music, who had a particular interest in the field of Canadian writing.

He was urged to accept the National Presidency but felt he could not spare the time this office deserved and remained Vice-President for Ontario until his untimely death in 1967.

Originally, the award consisted of a stylized owl motif cast in black iron by a Winnipeg sculptor discovered by the National President at the time, Vinia Hoogstraten. In 1973, her husband Neil was invited to submit a variation on this theme for the Association's re-instituted silver medal (1975). In time it became the logo of the whole CAA.
