CAA Allan Sangster Award
Honouring Long and Meritorious Service
Award History | Entry Information | Winners
History
Annually since 1968 the CAA has honoured one of its members for long and meritorious service.
This award is in memory of Allan S. Sangster, a CBC producer, especially in the realm of classical music, who had a particular interest in the field of Canadian writing.
He was urged to accept the National Presidency but felt he could not spare the time this office deserved and remained Vice-President for Ontario until his untimely death in 1967.
Originally, the award consisted of a stylized owl motif cast in black iron by a Winnipeg sculptor discovered by the National President at the time, Vinia Hoogstraten. In 1973, her husband Neil was invited to submit a variation on this theme for the Association's re-instituted silver medal (1975). In time it became the logo of the whole CAA.
Entry Information
The most recent winner of the Allan Sangster Award is responsible for arranging a secret vote by all former CAA member recipients (those still living and still CAA members) to choose the next winner and making the presentation at the conclusion of the annual Awards Dinner. This award may be won only once by an individual.
No other nominations are accepted.
